We ran the lab today. We had some absent students - mostly due to the math contest. Please be prepared to run the lab Monday @ lunch.

We practised balancing equations again and wrote a quiz on balancing equations. Homework: Read the lab & prepare the observation chart. This is not a formal lab, but the questions will be marked (inquiry/application). You need only: Title, name etc, purpose, observation (chart), questions & conclusion. It is not a full formal lab. It is due Monday March 1.
Today we did a note on types of reactions: synthesis/decomposition and singlel/double displacement. Homework/classwork: worksheet on synthesis/decomposition and balancing. Quiz on balancing Wednesday (tomorrow). Extra practise for balancing pg. 236 #7 - answers ARE in the back of the text.

We discussed the lab & clues that a chemical reaction did occur. Remember to answer a), g) and h) in 'Discussion' which you will write just above 'Conclusion'. Homework: Read 6.3, complete 'Counting Atoms Worksheet' and complete 'Poisonous jewellery' reading assignment pg. 255.
We had course selection presentations in class today. Course selections are due March 5th - Period 2 class returns to Mrs. Hudecki. (Period 1 - wherever you were for the presentation). Field Trip - guelph lake to support the ecology unit. We need 2 extra parents to make it run! We ran the lab today. Formal lab is due Monday Feb. 22 for both classes. Answer questions a) g) and h). Include these under the heading 'Discussion' and this goes before 'conclusion'.
Be familiar with the lab (6.2) on page 228-229. You have the period tomorrow, Thursday, to run it. Have the observation table ready to go. Period 1 - make sure you download or at least read the note on how to properly write up a formal lab - see the SNC 2D page for the file. Period 2 - we wrote this note on the board. This lab is due as a formal lab Monday Feb. 22nd. Student self-checklist is available on SNC 2D page. Use this to make sure your formal lab is in good shape!
Note on Chemical Reactions. Homework pg. 227 # 1,2,3,4,5,6,9. Prepare Table 1 (observations) for experiment - 228. Read over the experiment 6.2 so you know what you're doing tomorow!! Quiz on Chapter 5 tomorrow - this one is summative - it counts.
There was some disruption to class with the visit of Justin Trudeau, however, we did have class periods 1 & 2. With this in mind, the work covered is easily done at home. Homework: In preparation for the Chapter 5 quiz on Wednesay, complete 'Comparing Molecules -organizer' and 'Cost/Benefit Analysis'. These are both downloadable under 'Chemistry'. Extra help this week will be offerred Tuesday @ lunch since we are not here Monday - enjoy Family Day!
