Discussion on carrying capacity of an ecosystem for a certain species. There are factors pushing populations up and factors keeping populations low. they should be in balance. Note taken. Homework: continue preparing for bell-ringer and exam.
News articles were presented today. If you forgot, tomorrow is your last day. We saw a demo to illustrate bioaccumulation/biomagnification & discussed DDT as a real example. Homework: Studying for bell-ringer. Wed/Thurs. will have some SHORT review.
We took up questions from Sharkwater and watched more/all of the movie. Monday we will be working, in class, on the ecology news article you bring in, so please bring it in. this is our last marked assignment. Homework: Find an ecology news article and bring it in (must be text) and start reviewing for bell-ring/exam.
We are almost done watching the documentary, Sharkwater. It follows Rob Stewart's journey to find out why shark populations are rapidly declining and his attempt to try and reverse this trend. Homework: Please have an article on ecology (very broad). It can be newspaper, magazine or online article. Please have one of your own by Monday. Buy any weekend newspaper (Star, Globe & mail) and you WILL find an ecology article. There will be a short in-class assignment based on the article you choose.
We finished viewing 'Saving Species' and the value of maintaining biodiversity and the challenges. We introduced the idea of cycling carbon. Homework: Watch TV news or view internet news and find recent advancements in the gulf oil spill. Great (and unfortunate) example of how humans impact natural ecosystems.
Period 1 - was able to view more of 'Saving Species' - Planet Earth. Rest of period 1 and period 2 was the school mass celebrating our 2010 graduates!
Class had 15 minutes of review time and then an ecology quiz. Tomorrow we have mass in the morning. Next week we'll look at how humans impact on ecosystems more directly. Homework: With exams less than 3 weeks away, it's a good idea to reread notes from beginning of semester. Try reading over your chemistry notes!
Time given to finish Friday's seatwork. Take it up. Quiz on Thursday of the Ecology unit so far. Tomorrow (Wed.) will be review day.
