We learned what stem cells are today and what cell differentiation is. There is a downloadable note entitled 'Stem Cells . Homework: We worked on a worksheet entitled "specialized cells" - that is available on the Biology web page as well. Read 58-60 and answer 1-6 as well.
Today we looked at the hierarchy of structures in a living organisms. You had a worksheet - click here to download - or look for 'tissues & organs' on the webpage. Homework: Read 3.1 and answer # 4,5,6 at the end of the chapter.
Today you worked with microscopes to see mitosis in onion root tips and fish blastula. Homework: Tomorrow your cancer study is due.
Today we looked at a short video on cancer cells. You can find it on the Biology page of the website. A large chunk of the class was given to you to work on a Cancer ready assignment. This will be due Wednesday. Homework: work on the Cancer study
A note today on the cell cycle. If you were away, please get this note from anther student. Read 2.5. We modelled mitosis with DNA as well. Homework: Read 2.5 and do all the questions at the end of the chapter. You were also given a reading assignment on Aging. We finished our note on why cells divide. We took up homework. We also watched some video clips (available on webpage) of unicellular organisms. Finished by looking at microscope slides. Homework: complete the Technology handout I gave out last week (!)
We used the microscope today and compared onion cells to our cheek cells. We also used sugar cubes to discover why cells divide and why they stay so small. ie: why don't we have GIANT cells? We partly got through 2.3. Homework: Please finish reading 2.3 in text and answer # 1-6 on page 37. You should also finish the reading assignment I gave you yesterday about 'Looking Inside Cells'. Read p. 33 that accompanies this short worksheet.
Today we used the microscope to look at onion cells. WE stained them with iodine. IN the text there is a plant vs. animal cell lab. I believe its 2.2 (if I'm wrong, then its 2.3). Please answer as many of the questions about the lab that you can. Obviously you cannot answer the ones about human check cells since we didn't get that far! Also, read out Looking into our Cells. That reading is on page 33 YOu have a handout with
We learned the basics of microscopes today. You labelled the parts of a microscope (hand-out in class) and did a short activity. Also, you were given a sheet about Medical Technology (hand-out in class). Homework: complete the medical technology sheet for Tuesday. If you were absent, these sheets are available in class. Sorry, they are not currently available on the web. Remember Monday is a holiday for all of us! ***ANSWERS FOR CHAPTER 2 ARE POSTED ON THE BIOLOGY WEBPAGE ***
